CQC Registration

The Care Quality Commission is a government “QUANGO” which replaced the Healthcare Commission on the 1st April 2009. The function of the CQC is to oversee the registration and running of health and social care in England (and also to administer the legal functions of the former Mental Health Commission).

Between 1st April 2010 and 1st October 2010 there is to be a fundamental change to the regulation of healthcare in England. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 and the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2009 will mean that all Healthcare Professionals (with the exception of physiotherapists) will be required to register with the CQC if they undertake treatments for any “disease, disorder or injury”.

The type of treatment is not relevant so all types and modes of treatments will be included in this definition including lasers, peels, acupuncture, osteopathy, surgery or even prescription.

Carrying out regulated activities after the 1st of October 2010 without registration will be a criminal offence and could result in a fine of up to £50,000.00!

All currently registered establishments, clinics, hospitals etc will be required to re-register with the CQC before 1st October 2010. Application will not automatically guarantee that a new registration will be granted!.

Only when all of these requirements are satisfied will the CQC grant the

registration and will you be permitted to commence operating legally.
