Special Treatments License (Laser and IPL):

From October 1st 2010 non healthcare users of laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems were longer be registerable with the Care Quality Commission. Instead the regulation passed to local Councils. How the Local Authorities will regulate users of lasers and IPLs depends upon where they are based in the country. In some areas the regulation is now be through the Health & Safety at Work Act and associated regulations, however, throughout London and the surrounding areas the Local Authorities have the power to regulate under the Special Treatments License scheme.

Special Treatments Licenses are issued under local Council byelaws which can be directly enforced against anyone using a laser or IPL system to treat members of the public. The majority of the local Councils in London area are adopting the IHAS/APLHA Standards for Laser and IPL Safety. These provide for similar requirements in terms of safety as the old CQC standards but are simplified and streamlined to make compliance easier while still protecting the public.

LCS has put together a package specifically tailored for providers who are required to register for Special Treatments Licenses through their local Council including Laser Protection Advice (LPA) services (risk assessments and Local Rules), Expert Medical Practitioner service (including ongoing support through fax and email), advice on infection control and necessary policies.
